The industry

You think you want to know how the industry sees you, but think again. You donīt. But you should. So here it is:

  • You are taking up their time
  • You are getting the same treatment as everybody else
  • You have to be in the business to get into the business (or at least seem to be in the business...)
  • You will get criticised - by everybody
  • Your idea is what is on the paper, or what you just said, not its potential
  • You will be misunderstood
  • Your idea has hidden problems
  • Old ideas never dies, i.e. you will inherit the producers pet idea
  • You are the one who cares the most about the idea
  • Noone else will find you a job or write for you

But bear in mind, the industry isnīt always right.

Also, there are 7 ways into the industry, which you should know of:

  • Be famous
  • Know someone on the inside
  • Have another job in the industry
  • Submit spec scripts or pitch
  • Be part of an script contest
  • Be discovered by someone on the inside, via shortfilms etc
  • Have your own company and make your own films

Of course, there are variations on these strategies, but these are the basic ways in. Pick one, or more, and get going.

And the weird thing is that everyone of those strategies are based on the same three factors. Without these factors, you will get nowhere:

1. Luck - timing, opportunity, etc, which depends on...
2. Talent - inventiveness, patience, being able to handle pressure, etc, which is no good unless....
3. You write - a lot. You canīt sell what you havenīt got.

So, you see, itīs all up to you!
