There is equally much to be said about the job of writing, but I have a list taped on my computer to help me focus. It is a set of rules by Robert A. Heinlein:
"Rule one: you must write
Rule two: Finish what you start
Rule three: You must refrain from rewriting, except to editorial order
Rule four: You must put your story on the market
Rule five: You must keep it on the market until it has sold"
(But you could easily add, as someone did: "Rule six: Start working on something else")
Of course there are other things you should probably learn about what others think about the craft:
- The first million words you write are crap. Just get them overwith as soon as you can.
- Writing is rewriting.
- If you donīt read, donīt write.
- You should only write about things you know.
- Plan first, then write.
- You should kill your darlings. (Almost always only figuratively.)
- Show, donīt tell.
- All fiction is really attempts at persuasion. But if you want to send a message, use Western Union.
- Use your senses to stimulate the readerīs senses.
